Halibut are some of the best eating fish in these cold Alaskan waters. They average 20 to 40 lbs, although you never know when a really big one may come along. Our largest was caught in June of 2007. It took 1 hr 40 min to land this giant! It weighed in at 340lbs, was 8ft 1in long and placed 2nd in the Homer Halibut Jackpot Derby. Some refer to the bigger ones as "Barn Doors" and there is no doubt why. A large halibut can feel as if you are pulling up a large piece of plywood. They have an indescribable amount of power and one thing is for sure, when you finally win the fight and you are feeling totally exhausted, the smile on your face will surely tell the story! The limit for Halibut is 2 per person...one of any size and the 2nd one has to be under 29 inches. |
